What Is a YouTube Playlist Length Calculator?

It totals the runtime of the videos in a playlist so you don't have to add them up by hand. Paste the link and you get one figure back, along with a breakdown of what went into it.

The calculator works with publicly accessible playlists whose video information can be retrieved. Results may exclude private, deleted, restricted, or unavailable videos.

That caveat isn't boilerplate. Long playlists - especially course playlists that have been maintained for years - routinely contain entries that no longer resolve to a watchable video, and those entries have no duration to add.

How to Calculate a Playlist's Length

Step 1

Copy the playlist

Open the playlist and copy its link from the address bar.

Step 2

Paste the URL

Paste the playlist URL into the field at the top of this page.

Step 3

Calculate length

Click Calculate Playlist Length to retrieve the available videos and total their durations.

The tool retrieves the available videos in the playlist and adds their accessible durations. If any videos are unavailable, the result identifies how many were skipped.

What the Results Show

Every result breaks down into four figures rather than one, so you can judge how complete the total is:

  1. 1Total playlist entries - how many items the playlist contains
  2. 2Videos included - how many had a retrievable duration
  3. 3Videos skipped - how many didn't
  4. 4Combined accessible duration - the total, from the included videos only

The duration appears in hours and minutes for readability, with the exact seconds alongside it. A 14,000-second playlist is easier to plan around as 3 hours 53 minutes, but the raw figure is there if you need it for a spreadsheet.

If the skipped count is high, treat the total as a floor rather than an answer. Ten skipped videos in a 200-item playlist barely matters; ten in a 25-item playlist means your real total is meaningfully higher than what's displayed.

Why Some Videos Get Skipped

A playlist can be public while individual videos inside it aren't. Common reasons an entry has no retrievable duration:

  • The video was set to private by its uploader
  • The video was deleted or the channel removed
  • The video is region-restricted where the request originates
  • The video is age-restricted or otherwise gated
  • The video is temporarily unavailable

None of these are fixable from your side, which is why the skipped count is reported rather than silently absorbed into the total.

Watch Time at Faster Playback Speeds

The adjustment is a simple division:

The formula:

Adjusted watch time = Total duration ÷ Playback speed

Playlist durationPlayback speedAdjusted watch time
3 hours 48 minutes1.25xAbout 3 hours 2 minutes
3 hours 48 minutes1.5xAbout 2 hours 32 minutes
3 hours 48 minutes2.0xAbout 1 hour 54 minutes
3 hours 48 minutes3.0xAbout 1 hour 16 minutes

These estimates cover video runtime only. Ads, breaks, buffering, and time spent switching videos can make the actual viewing session longer.

In practice, a long playlist watched at 2x tends to take noticeably more than half the stated time. If you're planning around a deadline, add a margin.

Example Output

Example 1

Input: A 12-video tutorial playlist

  • Combined duration 3 hours 48 minutes - about 1 hour 54 minutes at 2x speed

Example 2

Input: A 40-video music playlist

  • Combined duration 2 hours 36 minutes - about 1 hour 44 minutes at 1.5x speed

Does YouTube Show Playlist Total Time?

YouTube's standard playlist interface generally shows individual video durations but may not provide one combined runtime for the entire playlist. This calculator adds the accessible video durations into a single total.

Presentation does vary between devices and surfaces, so it's worth a look before reaching for a tool - but if you're on a playlist of any real length, adding the durations by hand is the part nobody wants to do.

Planning Study Time With Course Playlists

Knowing the total up front is what makes a course playlist plannable rather than open-ended.

  1. 1Calculate the combined duration.
  2. 2Check the skipped count - a course playlist with gaps may need supplementing.
  3. 3Divide by the number of days or weeks you have.
  4. 4Add a margin for pausing, note-taking, and rewatching. For technical material, budget roughly double the runtime.
  5. 5If you'll be watching at a faster speed, plan against the adjusted figure rather than the raw one.

Step 4 is the one people skip, and it's the reason study plans built purely on runtime tend to slip. Passive viewing time and learning time aren't the same quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about YouTube Playlist Length Calculator.

How many hours is a YouTube playlist?+

It depends entirely on the playlist - a short tutorial set might run an hour or two, a full course many times that. Paste the link and the calculator returns the combined duration of the videos it can access, in hours and minutes.

Can I calculate the length of a private playlist?+

Private playlists normally require authorized access and cannot be calculated from a public link alone. If you own the playlist, you may change the playlist visibility to unlisted or public - but private or unavailable videos within it may still be excluded.

Why is the total lower than I expected?+

Most likely some videos were skipped. Check the skipped count in the result: private, deleted, and restricted entries carry no retrievable duration, so they don't contribute to the total.

Is there a limit on playlist size?+

Large playlists are retrieved in pages, so a long one takes longer to total than a short one. The result will tell you how many entries were found and how many were included.

Are the faster-speed figures exact?+

They're runtime divided by speed, so they're arithmetically exact but practically optimistic. Ads, buffering, and switching between videos all add real time that runtime alone doesn't capture.

Do I need an account?+

No account, no sign-up, and nothing to install.
